Denver, CO – The United States Bankruptcy Appellate Panel of the Tenth Circuit (BAP) is pleased to announce the appointment of Judge Janice Miller Karlin as its new Chief Judge effective September 4, 2015.
Judge Karlin, Bankruptcy Judge for the District of Kansas since 2002, was first appointed to the BAP in June 2008. Before taking the bench, Judge Karlin was an Assistant United States Attorney for 22 years, doing civil litigation and serving as the attorney in charge of the Kansas City office. Judge Karlin received her undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Kansas.
Judge Karlin will replace Judge William Thurman, Bankruptcy Judge for the District of Utah, in this role. Judge Thurman is retiring, but will continue service as a recalled bankruptcy judge.
The Chief Judge of the BAP is appointed by the Chief Judge of the Circuit, who also makes appointments to the BAP. The BAP hears appeals from the bankruptcy courts in the Tenth Circuit. The Tenth Circuit encompasses the states of Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Utah, and Wyoming.
